Berkana: the rune of new life

Berkana is the 18th rune in the Elder Futhark. It is phonetically, “B.” It is the second rune in Tyr’s Aett.

Berkana is the rune of birth, growth, circle of life, and the coming of spring. The rune is very much connected to birch tree. The Norse would use all parts of the birch tree. This rune may is connected to healing.

Berkana is connected to Bridget. This gets a little funky as Bridget appears in a couple of different belief systems. She is connected to Spring, new life, and a healer. This things all appear to match. As an interesting thought, if you put Berkana on its side, it appears to be a bridge. I will learn more about this during the coming month.

Old Norwegian:
Birch twig is the greenest of leaves;
Loki brought the luck of deceit

Old Icelandic:
Birch is a leafy branch
and little tree
and youthful wood

Anglo-Saxon
Birch bears no fruit, bears without seed suckers,
for from its leaves it’s generated, splendid are its branches
gloriously adorned its lofty crown, lifting to the sky.

Face up in a reading:

Feminine energy
Healing rune
Less accident prone
Protection for children

Face down:
Rot
Dying
Not going to be fun; unhappy
