Laguz: The rune of water currents and change

Laguz

Laguz is the 21st rune in the Elder Futhark. It’s phonetically, “L.” It’s the fifth rune in Tyr’s Aett.

The direct meaning of Laguz is lake or water. This rune is connected to the goddess Nerthus. She is connected to so many things. You can click on this link for more information about her.

Old Norwegian:
Water is where, a cascade falls from a mountain-side
but ornaments are made of gold

Old Icelandic:
Water is a welling stream
a broad geyser
and land of the fish

Anglo-Saxon:
The ocean seems interminable to men
If they venture on the rolling ship
and the waves of the sea terrify them
and the stallion of the sea heeds not its bridle.

Face up in a reading:
Flow, current, movement
Going with flow
Taken for a ride rather then choosing
This is what is going to happen to you have to respond
Travel

Face up in a reading:
Bad sign in direction
Not going in correct direction

Author’s Note: This post is being written during COVID 19. Each rune has had a deep effect on life changes for me.

This is the only rune for which I could not find a pendant online. I made this pendant from a cedar tree.
As this month will likely bring changes, I am hoping it’s good changes. I looked up Dana Paxton’s Taking Up the Runes: “Water is a powerful, unpredictable, and dangerous element that cannot be governed by human agencies.” If you’re interested, click on this link. I like this interpretation of what Laguz means.

Cassel Wakes Up With Something

Cassel Coat of Arms tattoo

Cassel Coat of Arms tattoo: The Norse runes are the names of their daughters, and Cassel is their last name.

Nothing Record Label tattoo

Nothing Record Label tattoo: They used to work with this record label. Famous bands including Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Prong, and Coil were on this label. The label worked with Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins. They got the tattoo to recognize that time in their life. It was the last job they had before they joined the Army.

Pentagram tattoo

Pentagram tattoo: They said it has their initials in the tattoo. They are not quite sure what the rest of it is for. They woke up with the tattoo, the same night they woke up with the mother of their first child.

Mannaz the Marriage Rune

Mannaz rune

Mannaz is the 20th rune in the Elder Futhark. It is phonetically, “M.” It’s the fourth rune in Tyr’s Aett.

Its direct meaning is “man,” or mankind. This is the rune of community or marriage. This rune represents the potential of each person. It can also symbolize the hero’s path.

Mannaz is connected to Heimdall. It is also said to be associated with the air element.

Anglo Saxon Poem:
The Mirthful man is dear to his kinsmen;
Yet every man must fail his fellows,
since the will of the Lord dooms
that the frail flesh to earth be taken

Norwegian Poem:
Man is the augmentation of the dust;
great is the claw of the hawk.

Icelandic Poem:
Man is the joy of man
an augmentation of the earth
and adorner of ships

Face up in a reading:
Man, mankind, community, group, family, friends
Marriage
The support will be there for you in the community
Interactions with people or a person
Exchange between yourself and the people around you
The best you can be, or your path to being your best

Face down in a reading:
No family
You may have to do this on your own
Lack people or relationships
You may need to focus on your spirit or yourself

Joejoes Note:
This was the community rune. This was both with and away from the people around me. With COVID 19. I spent time with my neighbors, and felt the distance of the people I was not able to see.

Ehwaz: The rune of forward movement

Ehwaz Rune

Ehwaz is the 19th rune in the Elder Futhark. It is phonetically, “e.” It’s the third rune in Tyr’s Aett.

Ehwaz direct meaning is, “horse.” From my understanding, it can be looked at as the thing that moves you forward. It would be a pairing of horse and rider, not a pairing of equals. The rider directs the horse. It may also be seen as a team “work” rune.

Ehwaz may be connected to Odin for trance. It is connected to Frey as the god of horses. It is also connected to Sleipnir.

Anglo-Saxon rune poem:
Horse is in front of warriors, the joy of noble men,
a charge proud of its hooves; when concerning it,
heroes and rich men on war horses exchange speech,
and it is ever a source of comfort to the restless.

In a reading face up:
A thing that moves you forward.
The tool that is needed
You may need to find a mentor
Ride the world tree
Trust
Loyalty
Teamwork

Reversed:
You don’t have what it takes
You are on the wrong path

Berkana: the rune of new life

Berkana is the 18th rune in the Elder Futhark. It is phonetically, “B.” It is the second rune in Tyr’s Aett.

Berkana is the rune of birth, growth, circle of life, and the coming of spring. The rune is very much connected to birch tree. The Norse would use all parts of the birch tree. This rune may is connected to healing.

Berkana is connected to Bridget. This gets a little funky as Bridget appears in a couple of different belief systems. She is connected to Spring, new life, and a healer. This things all appear to match. As an interesting thought, if you put Berkana on its side, it appears to be a bridge. I will learn more about this during the coming month.

Old Norwegian:
Birch twig is the greenest of leaves;
Loki brought the luck of deceit

Old Icelandic:
Birch is a leafy branch
and little tree
and youthful wood

Anglo-Saxon
Birch bears no fruit, bears without seed suckers,
for from its leaves it’s generated, splendid are its branches
gloriously adorned its lofty crown, lifting to the sky.

Face up in a reading:
Green and growing; growth
Feminine energy
Healing rune
Less accident prone
Protection for children

Face down:
Rot
Dying
Not going to be fun; unhappy

Tiwaz the rune of right action

Tiwaz is the 17th rune in the Elder Futhark. It is phonetically a “T.” This is the first rune in Tyr’s Aett.

Tiwaz is the rune of right action. It is also the rune of self sacrifice, and it’s the soldiers rune. This is a rune that people would swear an oath on.

Tyr is connected to Tiwaz. Tyr is the god of oaths, justice, and single combat.

Old Norwegian:
Tyr is a one-handed god;
often has the smith to blow

Old Icelandic:
Tyr god with one hand
and leavings of the wolf
and lord of temples.

Old English:
Tyr is a guiding star; well keeps faith
with princes; it is on course
over the mists of night never failing.

Face up in a rune read:
The thing you should or must do
May require sacrifice
Can mean connection of father and son
Make a choice

Face Down:
Bad sign
You are doing it wrong
Loss of your path
Not that important

Bloggers Note: This is my normal state. So I did not feel much change with this rune. I did need to do a bunch or prep, and it was close to new year. I did a bunch of planning of what I needed to get done in the next year.

Sowilo Light of the Gods

Sowilo Rune Pendant

Sowilo is the 16th rune in the Elder Futhark. It is phonetically, “S.” It is the 8th and last rune in Heimdal’s Aett.

Sowilo is the sun rune. It is the light or path of the gods. This may be looked at as the holiest run, because where there is no sun, there is death.

Sunna is the goddess connected to Sowilo. The Norse would go for a long time with no light in winter. When the sun would come back it would give back life, and new growth.

Old Icelandic:
Sun is the shield of the sky
and shining ray
and destroyer of ice.

Anglo-Saxon:
The sun to the seamen is joy on high
when they journey away over the fishes’ bath,
until the sea-horse of the deep brings them to land.

Sowilo face up in a rune reading:
This is one of the ones you want face up. It’s almost always a good thing.
The person’s path
Goal achieved
The health, power, or time will be there for you

Sowilo face down:
Bad idea
This will lead you astray
Not your path

Joejoes update: Sowilo was a much better month. I now have a new job, and I just updated my RHCE. I also had a abnormal amount of things break this month(bubbler, AC, Car, and some other things) . So many that it could not be a coincidence. I am not fully sure how Sowilo effects this. I just know there was an effect. I may had aided in having the strength stand firm on this things.

Multiple Bloodlines

Aliit ori'shya tal'din tattoo

Aliit ori’shya tal’din tattoo. This roughly translates into “family is more than a bloodline.” It is from the Mandalorian language of Mando’a. It represents a lot of the memories of their family that were adopted. These memories are worth more then some of their blood family. This was the first tattoo they got, and the moment they got out of the tattoo shop, they got a phone call from their father that their nephew was in the hospital on his last few breathes of life. They ended up speeding 90 miles an hour to the hospital. Every time they look at the tattoo it reminds them of their nephew who passed away from left heart ventricle syndrome.

Valknut tattoo

Valknut tattoo: They got this as a religious tattoo and it helps to remind them of their faith, and their connection to the Allfather Odin. It’s a nice guide to help them never fear the afterlife.

Algiz: The Shield Rune

Algiz Norse Rune

Algiz (Sometimes spelled Elhaz) is the 15th rune in the Elder Futhark. It is phonetically, “Z.” It is the 7th rune in Heimdall’s Aett.

Algiz is connected the to the Elk tree. A Elk tree hedge is almost impenetrable.

Algiz is connected to Eihwaz. My Eihwaz pendent has Wolfsangle type on one side and Algiz on the other.

Algiz is the primary rune in the Helm of Awe, which is a protective Norse symbol. Many Norse shields have the Helm placed on the front for both protection and terror for the enemy.

Anglo-Saxon Poem:
Elk’s sedge has its home most often in the fen,
it waxes in the water and grimly wounds
and burns with blood any person
who in any way tries to grasp it.

POEM NOTE: I’ve seen were the work person is a man, child, or warrior.

Algiz face up in a reading:
Protection or sanctuary
It’s going to be ok
You’re safe
Worthwhile

Algiz face down in a reading:
Face down does not mean danger, but it may mean not safe.
A sacred space needs to be created
Risky undertaking

Perthro: The Norse Rune of Synchronicity

Perthro Pendant

Perthro is the 14th rune in the Elder Futhark. It is phonetically, “P.” It is the 6th rune in Heimdall’s Aett.

Perthro may be looked at as the rune cup. It can be seen this way if turned on its side. It may also be connected to the feminine divine, as it may also be looked at as a womb. Perthro may be connected to Frigga. It may be the element water.

Perthro is connected to mystery. It has the energy of hidden things, secrets, and things unknown. Perthro can also combine the idea of cause and effect, precognition, and synchronicity. When you think something is going to happen, and it does. The way I read it, it could also be similar to when you change lanes on the highway, and the old lane speeds up… Non-synchronicity.

Perthro is a powerful rune. Whenever this rune is discussed in class, the teacher groans. Starting this month, I need to remember that I determine my own “wyrd.”

[Editor’s note: As a woman, I relate to this rune differently than the author (JoeJoe) does. I wear this rune necklace when I want life to be exciting, for instance if I’m going out partying. This is one of my favorite runes. It has a very distinctive feminine energy, and it might be harder for someone with purely male energy to understand..]

Anglo-Saxon Poem:
The lot box means play and laughter
where in the middle, the warriors sit
in the beer hall, happy together
*Lot box may be a gabbling cup.

Face up in a rune read:
Water, well, birth, dice cup (chance), feminine power
Bring into existence
It almost never means romantic partner, more likely family connection.
What you do not know
This rune’s meaning can change based on whether a man or woman is asking the question
Master of beyond
You may be able to find out eventually.

Face down in a read:
If a man is asking a question and face down, the man may get his own way.

Bloggers Note: Perthro is a rune of chance. I was in connection to the energy of chance, and luck.
